Announcements:

  • NOTE: You DO NOT need to complete the plants and algae lab objectives to attend lab or pass the lab quiz.
  • As it says on page L109 of your Survival Manual, "You will start with a quiz which will focus on pp. L124-L148 in this lab guide, and the text reading."
  • TO PREPARE FOR THE PLANT LAB QUIZ:
    • Understand the generalized life cycle (alternation of generations)
    • Learn some of the major characteristics of each phylogenetic group (distinguishing features, innovations, etc.)
    • Familiarize yourself with some of the major terms in the Survival Manual
    • Be able to draw a phylogenetic tree
    • Attend lecture on April 17
  • Plants and Algae Lab Practicals are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27. Be sure you know when you are signed up and where you will be starting the test. Be sure to arrive on time, once the quiz has started you will only be allowed to complete whatever portion of the quiz remains. You will not be allowed extra time or the opportunity to take the quiz at a later time. Also, be aware that there will be NO MAKEUP EXAMS for the Plants and Algae Lab Practicals. Check your practical time.
  • But there's so much new terminology! Streamline your studying of new terms by learning Latin and Greek!

1. Note that the algae should not be considered a monophyletic group. The term "algae" describes a group of superficially similar organisms that may not be closely related an almost certainly do not form a monophyletic group.

2.Note that the lab manual and Campbell text use slightly different terminology in the taxonomy of seedless vascular plants. For the purposes of the lab, whisk ferns, horsetails, and true ferns can all be considered subgroups within the phylum Pterophyta. The club mosses should be considered members of a evolutionarily distinct group, phylum Lycophyta.
