Colored transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Pseudomonas
aeruginosa bacteria. Pseudomonas are a genus of small, motile gram-negative bacilli
with a single polar flagellum. Most are saprophytic, live in soil and decompose organic
matter.
Most strains produce a blue-green pigment that can be seen
in the culture medium or in infected tissue. The species is a common human pathogen
found in urine, wounds, and burn patients; it is often difficult to treat since
it is resistant to most antibiotics.
May cause urinary tract infections
or otitis externa. Most of the cells seen here are motile by monotrichous
flagella. Mag: 8250x @77mm.
