Metaphase I. At metaphase the four chromosomes of the egg nucleus (left side) line up in homologous pairs along the equator of the spindle. The centromeres of each of the four chromosomes have attached to a spindle microtubule. The fertilization membrane around the oocyte is plainly visible in this slide.
