Modification of sperm and initiation of meiosis. The entrance of the sperm initiates the first meiotic division in the oocyte nucleus. Its chromosomes become visible as they shorten and condense. The sperm begins to lose its distinctive shape and the small, dark nucleus, clearly visible in the previous slide, becomes more diffuse.
