A cell (center) in early anaphase. At the beginning of anaphase the kinetochores of the chromatids forming each twin-chromatid chromosome will separate. Here the two sets of chromosomes have begun moving toward opposite poles of the spindle. The cell at the lower right is in late anaphase. Note the prominent spindle microtubules. Cytokinesis is just beginning in this cell.
