Contraception at Cornell

According to Gannett Health Services, there are 3 major methods of contraception used by students at Cornell University: (1) Abstinence is widely practiced but frequency of practicing this method is very hard to get numbers for; (2) The most frequent form of prescribed contraception used is either one or another type of hormone based contraceptive pill and Depo-Provera; about 20% of the Gannett Clinic sales is injectable hormones, 70% being one or another type of contraceptive pill; (3) Many male condoms are sold each year. Hardly any female condoms are sold each year (possibly because the female condoms have short expiration dates and are much more expensive). A very few diaphragms or cervical caps are sold annually. Emergency contraception is offered and is becoming more frequently used, perhaps because of greater awareness of options. RU486 is not offered at Gannett Clinic; women requesting RU486, medical abortion, are referred to Planned Parenthood of Tompkins County or to a private office.

According to Gannett Clinic’s Annual Report, June 2002, there were 34 pregnancies for whom counseling was provided by Gannett Clinic for the 2001-2002 school year with 28 women opting for abortion.

Gannett Clinic also treats a number of students for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Below is a list of STDs in order of decreasing frequency of reported cases:

Cornell students are an atypical group so the frequency of diseases differs from the general population. Also the frequencies of HPV and Chlamydia may reflect recurring infection and the need to retreat instead of a new case in each instance.
