Xylem and phloem in trees

These photographs show freshly cut trees exuding sugary liquid from the phloem.

This shows you the location of the phloem in the tree trunk.

Notice that most of the trunk consists of xylem.

In the top photo, you can see the rot at the center of the xylem.

A tree can withstand considerable deterioration of the xylem and remain alive.
